Last year I lost my father who passed away, and I also lost my step children through divorce. I know that often men (myself included) go through life not appreciative of what they have. Your child, your stepchild, your wife, your parents- can often be mistaken as a right, when In reality they are a gift and a privelege -and a very fragile one at that. To all people who are blessed with the role of Father, step parent or grandparent, i urge you this day to look around you and be greatful for what you have an use this as a benchmark to find ways to do better in the coming year.

It’s easy to take the love and support of family for granted, especially for men who might be conditioned to focus on strength and stoicism. We often get caught up in the daily grind, overlooking the simple joys of having loved ones around. This is a mistake.

Your experience serves as a stark reminder that family is not just a given, but a precious gift. Just like any gift, it deserves to be cherished and nurtured. Take a moment to reflect on the laughter shared with your children, the comforting presence of a spouse, or the unwavering support of parents. These are the moments that weave the tapestry of our lives, and they can’t be replicated.

Let this be a turning point. Use your experience to become a more present and engaged family member. Actively listen to your loved ones, express your appreciation for their presence, and make time for shared experiences. A simple “thank you” for a home-cooked meal, a genuine compliment to your child’s artwork, or offering a helping hand with chores can go a long way in strengthening bonds.

Remember, family is the foundation upon which we build our lives. It’s the source of unconditional love and support, the safety net that catches us when we fall, and the cheering section that celebrates our victories. By cherishing your family and expressing your gratitude, you not only enrich their lives but also create a more fulfilling and meaningful existence for yourself.

Above all, listen, and be aware and be appreciative of what you have because it can all be gone in a second. The very family you serve is the only gift you need. Family is precious.
